Marpac Sound Screen & SleepMate 980 combines American ingenuity and craftsmanship to create a lightweight, yet durable appliance capable of many years of reliable service. Marpac sound conditioners create a consistent, smooth sound of rushing air. The tone and volume of the sound are controlled by simply rotating the "cap" and "collar" of the housing. This "white noise" sound effectively masks unwanted noises and creates a sense of calm, making it easier to concentrate, relax and/or sleep. These sound conditioners are recommended for restless sleepers, shift workers, infants, children, students, apartment dwellers, office workers (for confidentiality) and many others. The dual speed 980 is made of durable plastic housing suitable for travel or use in the home or office.

« Not for People That Like the Sound of a Quiet PC »
It is very likely this review will get passed up by the 900+ others, but it's important to realize this "Sound Conditioner" isn't for everyone. When I first purchased the SleepMate I was excited to receive it after reading the great reviews and watching a couple YouTube clips (which in hindsight only give you half an idea of what they sound like). When it was first turned on, it sounded like a mix between an old computer fan (specifically CPU) and a very quiet vacuum. There are two volume levels. It has basic "EQ"ing by cutting the higher frequency noises with a twist of the top or cutting mid frequencies with a twist at the middle; you can't control the lower frequency noises. When the mids and highs are cut all the way down you can hear the motor clearest. When twisting full open, you cycle through various 1990's PC fan noises--full open being the cheapest sounding PC of them all. I spend extra money buying quiet case fans for work to prevent hearing this all day. Why would I want to bring this sound to my home? If listening to a noisy PC is not your idea of a great night's sleep, then stay away from this.

If you like the sound of wind blowing, then buy yourself a quiet desk fan or a larger one for big spaces. Have it face the ceiling and cover parts of it with duct tape or place various objects on or around it to get more EQing (if that's your thing). They usually have 3+ "volume" (aka speed) settings. If you're concerned about your room being drafty just place the fan facing an enclosed space, like in a far corner or under a vanity, to create a weak vortex. Your ears will thank you for it and you'll have more utility during the summer months.

    « Sound machine »
We are getting a good night sleep. We live in a two family house and the sound machine helps block out foot trafic upstairs. Living in a city can be noisy and the sound machine helps dull the loudness of living in the city, so we are sleeping better.

    « A wonderful product! »
I purchased the Sleepmate when my other sleep product started to mess up. Mine was a recording and you could start to hear a pattern. I love the Sleepmate as it is an actual sound and not a recording. I have it on the lowest setting and I am sleeping soundly once again. When we have company that stays up past my bedtime, I just increase the sound and it blocks everyone out. I am very happy with this product.

    « Almost loud enough. »
I live in an apartment that has almost zero insulation.
I can hear every peep out of the people that live above me.
From the creaking floor boards to the verbal fisticuffs between drunken lovers to other noises that are best left unmentioned. UUGH!!!
I've been sleeping with a box fan for years and the fan usually does the trick for drowning out the usual garbage.
The creaky floor boards seem to have gotten worse so I decided to try the Marpac 980 after reading my friend "Bob's" review.
After a few nights, I can say that, alone the Marpac isn't that effective at blocking low end bass noise. The box fan is better for that. The Marpac is better at higher sounds like the creaking boards.
So....I combine the Marpac with my box fan and a pair of ear plugs and I'm averaging seven hours of sleep a night.
Granted, even with all three methods deployed simultaneously they don't drown out everything but I'd say 90% of the noises I don't want or need to hear are drowned out.
I give the Marpac a thumbs up but it's not a cure all.....
Now all I have left to do is ask the lady upstairs if her boyfriends name is really "Oh baby" or is that just what she calls him.
    Like I said..........UUGH!!!
    Marpac......recommended.
